When I do it without the beans (usually because I forget, or even can't afford them right then) I do it as an entree with taco chips. If I remember the beans, though, it is even better, especially when the tomato sauce is home made. But Chili, as I make it, is always a "whatever's available at the moment dish". The only necessaries are the ground beef and sauce. Anything else is often improvised or spur of the moment. No recipe can ever be pinned down exactly or completely repeated.
