Hot Dogs (part of the Tomato Threads) From: "sally.mullock" To: anglican@list.stsams.org Subject: Gadgets? Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2003 Mimi wrote > I bought a brand new electric Hot Dog cooker . . . What on earth can a Hot Dog cooker be, other than a glorified saucepan? Surely you just open the tin, tip the sausage and brine into a pan and warm them? Don't 'they' come up with some crazy ideas for things we 'must' have!! Love SallyM ----------------------------------------- From: Glenn Hammett The only canned hot-dogs I've seen were those soy vegetarian things that 7th Day Adventist eat. I don't like the cheap ones made with chicken, turkey, and other meat mixed together. The best are all beef with Kosher hot dogs topping the list. Wieners or hot dogs are sold in plastic wrap (isn't everything) in the meat counter. I don't like boiled hot dogs, although I will sometimes dump them in the chili and heat them up at the same time. The best way to cook hot dogs is by grilling or broiling, but the absolutely best way is to stick them on a straightened coat hanger or long stick and cook them in a camp fire. Truthfully, hot dogs aren't a big favorite of my but I keep five or six packages in the freezer to use when I'm to tired or lazy to cook anything else. +Glenn ----------------------------------------- From: "sally.mullock" I must checkout if we have plastic-sealed hotdog sausages here, when I used to occasionally buy them when my children were young, I always got the tinned variety! I cannot think of much on our mear counters that is sealed, much stuff is in trays and wrapped in plastic, but not hermetically sealed. Mind you, I have a local butcher who doesn't seal anything! Love SallyM ----------------------------------------- From: pineden Nathan's hot dogs (all-beef, kosher, and yummy) are a household staple with us. They "pop" when you bite into them, too. Hebrew National ("We answer to a higher authority") are our second choice. However, if we were living in my husband's home town of LaCrosse, WI, there would be no doubt..it would be Bakelaar (sp?) Brothers, a locally made product which is superior to either of the above. They also make wonderful ring bologna, which you can't get under any brand name down here :-( When we visited LaCrosse in 1988, we bought two styrofoam coolers full of Bakelaar products. We also bought some dry ice and put it in the coolers with the sausages. We then wrapped each cooler in one of our sleeping bags and put them in our cartop carrier. When we got home after a 2- day drive in record heat, all the sausages were solidly frozen. Jay ----------------------------------------- From: Soonersntx > wonderful ring bologna, What is that? ----------------------------------------- From: pineden Ring bologna is bologna made into a ring the general size and shape of a Hillshire Farms (TM) sausage. It's sometimes more garlicky and a little coarser in texture than sandwich bologna. It's wonderful cooked in with beans. Strictly a yankee thing, I guess *sigh* Jay ----------------------------------------- From: Soonersntx Subject: hotdogs Hot dogs are a funny thing. I used to like to eat them (especially at baseball games!) but when I was pregnant with ds I could not tolerate them, and still get slightly nauseous if I think about eating them.
