She doesn't like chili with beans. My stepdaughter, a vegetarian, thinks it should have no meat. She likes to point out that Jesus, according to PETA, was a vegetarian. Yeah, right. She doesn't like beans either and favors chili con tofu. Me, I don't like beans on the side - garnish smarhish! I like them when they are well cooked in chili, which does impart flavor to them. If chili it is not, it is a dish I like. Pinto beans, black beans, kidney beans are all different and all good. Now here in New York we don't much care all that much about chili, regrettably. Spaghetti sauce is another thing (or gravy as some Italians like to call it). There are as many varieties of sauce as there are Italians in New York. A local New York restaurant keeps one pot of something going on the stove. Served in a bowl, it is chili. Over pasta it is sauce Bolognese, over tortilla chips it is nachos. Spread on a bun it is a sloppy Joe. It can also be rolled into a burrito. It is good to see that Anglicans can disagree about something. Dan Porter
