From: "Tony Hitsman" To: "Anglican Mailing List" Subject: Anglican chili again Date: Wed, 6 Feb 2002 Ellen, I'll try your version of chili maybe next week, when I have a bit more time to find the ingredients. Could you post your recipe again? I've never seen a recipe for chili con carne that did not include beans - either garbanzo, pinto, or red kidney, but I'm willing to try something different. I assume you serve a salad and cheese on the side, although in these parts folks sometimes sprinkle shredded cheese on top of their chili. Bean-less chili sounds to me like something the early settlers in the south might have had, would that be an accurate guess? from: http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/4079/History/Chili/ChiliIndex.htm Chili, Chili Con Carne DEFINITION - Chili is a stew-like soup made entirely with meat, chiles, or chili powder (or both) and according to what region of the United States that you live in, it can also include beans. "Con carne" means "with meat." ------------------------- From: "Ellen Rains Harris" Sir, I will ignore the gratuitous impropriety of asking for my chili recipe, since I will assume that you did not know that it was akin to asking what shade my bloomers were. However, if it is impossible for you to travel here, then I shall freeze some chili, pack it in dry ice, and mail it to you, labelled as "religious supplies." Yr Obdnt etc., Mrs H ------------------------- From: "Andrew H. Auld" Can y'all even GROW beans properly up there? Not hardly sweets...you want my recipe? You'll need an opium suppository if you eat a whole bowl... - pax - Andrew H. You see, the idea of garbanzo beans in chili is actually bringing me to tears. Next, somebody will be giving us a chili recipe that includes french-cut green beans.... Oops, well, I asked too, so sorry. We'll just have to slog on in ignorance, eating beans in our chili! Is this a challenge? ;-) I keep thinking - I need a foodie corner all my own that I can issue dictates and caveats for. I'm in with the pork crew on the barbecue, but ... I could tell you all that no real Southerner puts sugar in his cornbread, but you would all say who eats cornbread? I could offer up my recipe for Greek pastitsu/pastichio, but a legion of Orthodox Greek eaters would tell me those women at the church in Charleston didn't know what they were talking about and really came from Malta. It's tough when you're still a relatively new kid on the block. Sherri
