Tuna salad on a split and toasted bun, topped with cheese slices
and grilled until the cheese melts.

Grilled tuna salad and cheese sandwich; it's usually on rye bread or sourdough.
I think it's good, but then I always like tuna salad.

Locally it's made on wheat with fried onions added. Yummy. 8-)

The fried onions sound good.
It's certainly different from the tuna fish sandwiches I had as a kid:
tuna, Miracle Whip, and sweet relish mixed up and put on Wonder Bread.

New Jersey Diner special. Two slices of toasted rye or crusty bread, scoop
of tuna on each slice, slice of cheese on top, passed under the salamander
to melt the cheese. Sometimes called "The happy Waitress" on some diner menus. There are many
varieties of "The happy waitress" though; not all are food related.

Richard, out here a salamander is a kind of lizard that lives under rocks.
Why do I think that's not what you're passing your tuna/cheese sandwich under?

<snip> My mother always made tuna salad with chopped celery, apples, boiled eggs,
sweet pickle relish and all held together with mayo or Miracle Whip. <snip>
