Cleaning Copper

Another household hint, btw, if you _want_ gleaming clean "pink" copper bottoms for decoration, is to spread them with ketchup or tomato sauce, let them set a while, and scour with steel wool. Vinegar might do the same thing, but the tomato clings better for the setting phase. I figure it's a waste of good food, and I don't mind the splotchy stained bottoms. I also figure that the steel wool would remove too much of the copper layer, a micron or so at a time, over time and many washings.

I sprinkle salt over the bottoms and then put a vinegar-saturated paper towel on it. After a few minutes, the bottom is *sort of* gleaming.
